BREAKING: Former President of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings is dead

Former President of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings, is dead.

He died at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra on Thursday.

Born on 22 June 1947, the former military chief served from 1981 to 2001.

Rawlings led a military junta until 1992, and then served two terms as the elected President.

He resigned from the military in 1992 and founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

He was the first President of the Fourth Republic and was re-elected in 1996 for another four years.

After his tenure, Rawlings endorsed his vice-president John Atta Mills as presidential candidate in 2000.

He served the African Union envoy to Somalia.
