Former Liverpool player John Barnes believes that his former club will be able to retain their Premier League title this season if Jurgen Klopp’s current injury crisis does not worsen.
Liverpool is currently third in the Premier League standings with the last match before the international break against Manchester City-both sides shared the 1-1 draw spoils.
The Reds Boss Jurgen Klopp suffered the first blow when Virgil van Dijk suffered a knee injury in the Merseyside derby 2-2 draw, ending his season with immediate effect.
Joe Gomez followed suit after he had suffered a patellar tendon injury during his training with England, essentially removing him this campaign.
Scotland international Andy Robertson is also the latest casualty with a thigh injury but it remains to be seen if he will be able to continue his season.
Liverpool have been without Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho but reports claim that the midfield duo should be available for selection in the coming months – a much-needed boost for the boss.
Barnes affirmed that the Reds can still clinch the title if the squad doesn’t lose any more key players to injury as that will make the team vulnerable to the opposition.
“I think it will be first or second,” Barnes told Playojo in an interview.
“Of course, I’m going to say first. I want it to be first but I think it’ll be between Liverpool and Manchester City because they are the two best teams.
“If everyone stays fit, I can say Liverpool will finish first but you know, between them and Man City up at the top.”
